Lamborghini Gallardo

The Lamborghini Gallardo is a sports car built by Lamborghini and its most-produced model to date, with over 10,000 built in its first seven years of production. Named after a famous breed of fighting bull, the V-10 Gallardo has been Lamborghini's sales leader and stable-mate to a succession of V-12 flagship models—first to the Lamborghini MurciĆ©lago (4,099 built between 2001 and 2011), then to the current flagship Lamborghini Aventador.

The first generation Gallardo came with a 5 liter 90 degree V10 (4961cc), based on Audi's 4.2 Liter V8 developed by Cosworth. The Gallardo offers two choices of transmissions, a conventional (H-Box) six-speed manual transmission, and an advanced six-speed electro-hydraulically controlled semi-automatic robotized manual, which Lamborghini abbreviates to "E-gear". The "E-gear" allows the driver to make shifts much faster than they could with a manual transmission. The driver shifts up and down via paddles behind the steering wheel, but can also change to an automatic mode.

For the MY2006 (launched in late 2005) Lamborghini introduced many changes to the car to counter some criticisms garnered from the press and owners. These were based on the limited edition Gallardo SE. The exhaust system was changed to a more sporty one (including a flap to make it quieter around town), the suspension was revised, a new steering rack was fitted, the engine power was increased by 20 bhp to a maximum of 520 metric horsepower (382 kW; 513 hp), and the biggest change was an overall lowering of the gearing, especially in 1st to 5th. The result was a much improved car; it handled and turned better, sounded better under full throttle and the extra power and lower gearing made an already fast car into a much faster one.

The Lamborghini Gallardo is an Italian high-performance exotic supercar. Joining the all-wheel drive LP560-4 coupe and Spyder (convertible) and LP570-4 Superleggara and the rear-wheel drive LP550-2 base coupe are the all-wheel drive LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale coupe, LP570-4 Blancpain coupe and Performante Spyder and the rear-wheel drive LP550-2 Bicolore.

The full-time all-wheel drive Gallardo LP560-4 is powered by a 552 horsepower direct-injected 5.2-liter V10 controlled by a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional sequential six-speed 'E-gear' transmission. The LP570-4 Superleggara, Super Trofeo Stradale, Performante and Blancpain use the same engine but horsepower is bumped up to 562, and the E-gear transmission is standard. The base LP550-2 and Bicolore have slightly less horsepower at 543, but the deletion of the all-wheel drive system saves almost 300 pounds, and the driveline and suspension are thoroughly tuned and revised for rear-wheel drive dynamics. With a focus on weight loss, the LP570-4 Superleggara features exterior and interior carbon fiber body components, forged alloy wheels and Alcantara sport seats with carbon fiber shells, and exterior modifications, including a remodeled front bumper, are all directed at increasing aerodynamic effects and increasing the supply of cooling air. The Blancpain adds matte black paint, carbon ceramic brakes, Skorpius wheels, rear wing spoiler, and yellow stitching accents. The Perfomante is basically a convertible version of the Superleggara. The Bicolore features an exclusive two-tone finish with matching interior, Skorpius forged alloy wheels, and a tempered glass engine hood. The Super Trofeo Stradale is based on the successful race car from the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, the world's fastest single make series, and features gloss black forged alloy wheels, a large manually variable wing spoiler and removable engine hood with quick-release system. A navigation system and rear view parking camera are available. Optional (standard on the Blancpain) light-weight carbon ceramic brakes offer superior durability and reduce brake fade, where the brakes become less effective due to overheating in extremely demanding conditions such as racing. Other options include Alcantara interior trim and a variety of wheel designs and colors.

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale coupe, LP570-4 Blancpain coupe, LP570-4 Performante Spyder and LP550-2 Bicolore trims are new for 2012.

2013 Lamborghini Gallardo

Whatever the impetus for Lamborghini’s “flat planes and sharp creases” era of design—a deep pathological fear of curves, dwindling stock in Italy’s strategic reserve of protractors—the decision has paid off in spades. Take the Gallardo, for instance: Lamborghini claims to have assembled nearly 13,000 of the baby bulls at its Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. Not bad for a company that was tossed between owners like a financial hot potato during the decades preceding the Gallardo’s 2003 debut. The current LP560-4 version arrived in 2008.

Now in the September of its years, Lamborghini sent the Gallardo in for the usual automotive nip-and-tuck session to maintain interest and keep orders coming in advance of its demise sometime next year. (We’ve previously covered its successor’s drivelines and features, philosophy and architecture, and dearth of transmission options.) The freshened car is making its debut at the Paris auto show; Lambo also dropped special LP570-4 Edizione Tecnica models based on the Superleggera and Spyder Performante, which are themselves spin-offs of the base Gallardo.

But back to the regular car. Up front, a new grouping of sharp triangular and trapezoidal forms, highlighted in body color and black, give the Gallardo LP560-4 a broader and more serious look. The air intakes on the outer edges of the fascia are now a tad larger, and new 19-inch matte-black aluminum wheels with polished silver spokes keep the new-for-2013 train on the tracks. The geometrics get slightly revised in back, too, as the engine’s air outlet is wider, improving thermal efficiency in the process.

Buyers looking to display a subtle touch of factory-supplied individuality can opt for the Gallardo’s Style package, which treats the underside of the front spoiler, the front and rear grilles, and the transverse element of the rear trim to a coat of high-gloss black paint.
